Bower and Comp response:
We had to make a collage of all the food we ate for a 24-hr period. Here is mine.
I think that digital art, digital interaction, and many-to-many interactions make up New Media. I think that New Media includes film, photography, audio...etc. I would consider a New Media “person” to be anyone who works with computers, and creates interactions. Including programming, blogging..etc.
1.How did NMD206 change my understanding of New Media? What was my understanding when I began the class and what was it at the end? What was the turning point for when my ideas about New Media changed (if they did)?
I think that NMD206 changed my understanding of New Media in that it introduced me to “hacked” art, which I had always seen but never realized what it was. I was introduced to new terms, like “eco-tech”, “autobotography”, and “hacktivism”. Before NMD206 I had a narrower view of what New Media is, now that the class is, almost, complete I see that New Media is very broad, and all of the examples that we saw in class prove that.
2.Which kind of New Media work is most interesting for me to view? To make? How did I do with each of my four main projects? Which of the four categories apply to my final project and how/why?
The New Media work that was most interesting for me to view was Hacktivism project, and the one that was the most to make was the Deep Play project. I liked making all of the four main projects, and I think I did well with all of them. My final project goes with the Eco-Tech section, it is an extension of my approach.
3.Was I responsible for learning the materials or did I rely on the teacher to provide the content? Did I do the readings, prepare notes, and contribute ideas or questions from the readings to class, or in my work? Have I kept good reading notes on my webpage?
I was responsible for learning the materials. I read all of the readings on time so that the lectures made sense. I used class time to listen to the professor (Joline) clarify certain points in the readings. I answered the reading questions on time, and posted them to this site, and that helped me further understand and analyze the readings.
4.What was my strongest contribution to class? If I could do this class again, what would I contribute?
I think my strongest contribution to the class was having my “attempts” done on time and ready for presentation. I think that visuals are really important to have when trying to get an idea across, and I feel like my visuals were my strongest contribution.
5.Which contributions from my classmates influenced my thinking? How?
I like the critiques my classmates provided every time we had to present our ideas or approaches. The critiques helped me further my ideas and make my projects better.
6.For me, the best things about Joline’s approach/material/readings/assignments/feedback were:
The class discussions, the setup of “the pool” for posting intents and approaches.
7.What I wish Joline would do next time to improve the class:
Less discussion so that everyone had equal amounts of time to present in class. We always went over our class time, and the first presenter always got a good long discussion and the last person had to rush.
8.What didn’t work for me in this class (what would have worked better in this regard):
Like I said before we were always rushed at the end of class to get everyone in and present. I think that having everyone present their intents or approaches, and then have a class discussion. That way everyone would have an equal time to present, and we could discuss after.
9.Overall evaluation of my progress and learning in this class. Take your time to think about this and use examples from your work to explain your reflections.
I think that I gradually improved during this class, one because I learned “how the class worked” and I developed a strategy for the class. Second because the more projects I did, the more creative I feel I became with them. I started using more resources, and looking up more examples of each topic.
